What are Fabrication Drawings?
Fabrication Drawings are usually used for off’s or per job/project bases (compared to Manufacturing Drawings).
The fabrication drawings offer a specific type of detail drawing. Some fabrication drawings are virtually assembly drawings, like a number of items are assembled as a fabrication. The fabrication drawings you get generally includes a material parts list that identifies all the materials used to build the fabrication. All weld details include using the standard symbolic representation of welds as shown in AS/NZS 1554.1. All of the materials should be identified by the relevant standards and codes.

The drawings (similar to manufacturing drawings) come with split into two main categories:
1. Part Drawing
The drawings detail the part itself that require fabrication for use. For example, it’s a welder. It indicates the material & surface finish.
The drawings include the following information (however, not show more information than is required):
- Material Specification
- Linear Dimensions including Tolerances
- Angular Dimensions including Tolerances
- Weld Location & Type
- Weight
- Flat patterns, including bend lines
2. Assembly Drawing
Depending on the complexity, Assembly drawings are often structured into a top-level assembly and sub-assemblies. It gives more clarity to the entire product. Assembly drawings should include:
- All Sub-Assemblies used within the assembly
- All bought contains specific part numbers, manufacturer or supplier.
- All parts to be fabricated
- Fixings such as Bolts, Nuts, Washers etc.
- Bill of materials (BOM) showing a complete list of all parts
- Cut Lists stating length and angles
The drawings are illustrated in a way to show how the Fabrication fits together clearly. It includes several views like (plan, top, side, isometric etc.) and exploded views.
Additional information requires weight; assembly instructions should include if needed.
Good quality drawings must show all the information that is required, but no more than needed. An example is too many dimensions or too many views.

This depends on the industry involved.
For structural steel fabrication drawings (including, Stairs, Balustrading, Architectural Steelwork etc.). We usually work from the Structural Engineers Line Drawings in conjunction with the Architectural Drawings. We typically visit the site to check any potential clashes.
